Who We Are

The American Legion Auxiliary

Patriotism and veterans advocacy are so important to the American Legion Auxiliary that for a century, we’ve been serving, educating, and giving to America’s finest – our military.

We answer the call of Service Not Self. We are the male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and direct and adopted descendants of members of The American Legion. Some of us are veterans ourselves.

We are the American Legion Auxiliary. And we make a difference. You’ll find us in more than 8,000 local communities in the USA and foreign countries. Founded in 1919 during the first National Convention of The American Legion, the ALA has grown to be one of the largest veterans support organizations. And we’d love for you to be part of our mission outreach.*

MEET LISA CHAPLIN

A LIFETIME OF ALA INVOLVEMENT

I belong to Colonial Heights Unit 284 and have been an ALA Department of Virginia member since 1984. I am eligible through my late father, John Thomas, who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. My biggest ALA influence was my mother, Past National President Peggy Thomas.

EXPERIENCE AT ALL LEVELS

I’ve held many unit and district offices and chairs, and on the Department level served as chair of the Education, Children and Youth, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, Leadership, and Outstanding Virginian Committees, and was the Department (state) President during our organization’s 100th Anniversary year 2019-2020.
